Among the multiple difficulties to be faced by Lyme patients is that it is a very unknown disease included for the medical community.

Lyme involves a series of co-infections associated that sometimes generate the wrong diagnosis by part of the primary care doctors or specialised attention that consequently imply treatments that are not efficient. A situation that generates a big discomfort, anxiety, or depression in people suffering from Lyme that feel completely unattended.

These are co-infections. Lyme symptoms can be nonspecific and are shared with other diseases like fibromyalgia or arthritis. Symptomatology isn’t clear and in a possible case that can´t be determined the association with a tick bite. Any specialist considers it Lyme.

As a patient, in response to suspicions of suffering Lyme you can exercise some rights you dispose of that can help you to listen to you and that way to obtain a true diagnosis. Without a doubt the first step to heal your disease.

Among these rights, we find the free election of a doctor without justification and the request to have a second medical opinion.

The free election to have a primary care election and specialist attention is a right of citizens that can exercise in their health center. It is possible if the patient requests a previous interview with the physician.

For their part, the second medical opinion is another of the patient’s rights that allows requesting a new report done by a different professional different from the first diagnosis.

To request a second medical opinion, a series of assumptions that a person can enter with Chronic Lyme: to suffer or be facing a degenerative disease without a healing treatment or a rare illness diagnosis confirmation.

In the case of Lyme disease, your case could fall into one of these two categories. At the Ángel Bueno – SOS Lyme Foundation we consider that it is difficult to find specialists in healthcare with sufficient experience and knowledge to detect chronic Lyme disease. As always, we demand a greater role for this pathology in medical training.
